Respirator Fit Testing Requirements
As outlined under the respiratory protection standard, the following are key requirements:
- Employers must ensure employees using tight-fitting respirators are fit-tested prior to initial use, annually, and whenever a different respirator is used or a change occurs that may affect fit (e.g., weight loss, facial surgery).
- Employees must be trained on how to properly use and maintain respirators, understand their limitations, and recognize when they are defective.
- Employers must maintain records of fit tests and medical evaluations for the duration of employment and beyond as required.
- Respirators must be used in environments where hazardous substances exceed permissible exposure limits (PEL), and they must be worn consistently as per the safety protocols.
Important Facts About Respirator Fit Tests
